In 1989, Dr. Payan moved to the Monterey Peninsula and opened Soft Tissue Medical Center, a practice founded on a specific soft tissue manual therapy, flexibility and exercise. Prior to graduating from UCLA in 1984, Dr. Payan became involved with powerlifting and bodybuilding. His real interest in chiropractic sports medicine evolved from the treatment he received after a upper back injury lifting weights. His recovery led him to attend Life Chiropractic College-West in San Lorenzo, Calif., where he received his degree as a Doctor of Chiropractic (DC) in 1988.

As a Certified Chiropractic Sports Physician (CCSP), Dr. Payan is an expert in his field. In addition, he is a National Sports and Performance Conditioning Specialist, and Certified Strength and Conditioning Coach and Certified Personal Trainer.
